YOUR PHONE COULD SOON TELL YOU WHEN YOU ARE NOT FIT TO DRIVE

Usually, you can tell when you’re too stoned or drunk to drive, yet as Wired reports, a phone app could one day act as a personal warning against driving intoxicated.

To show how this app, which is called Druid, works, the author of this story, Robbie Gonzalez, lit up a joint, then tested himself. It gave him an “impairment score” of 50.3, which was a “moderate level of impairment.” The app also warned, “You should avoid driving until your impairment decreases.” (Usually, Gonzalez’s score, when he’s sober, is about 37.)

Druid was created by a Boston psychologist, Michael Milburn, who told Wired he developed the test “from a careful examination of the driving impairment literature, building it around things like hand-eye coordination and divided-attention tasks that can suffer under the influence of alcohol and cannabis.”

Since there currently isn’t a breathalyzer test for pot, the Druid could be a good way to gauge your sobriety and keep you off the road if you’re impaired. There are other apps currently in the works, including one called Am I Stoned?, which Wired explains can gauge “a user’s elevated state by assessing cognitive speed, recognition time, fine motor ability, and memory.”

And as Milburn adds, “This whole app thing started out as an intellectual exercise, but it’s really become much more than that. I think it has immense potential – I think it can save lives.”
